PETALING JAYA: Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed has warned Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders against making statements that could jeopardise the working relationship between Barisan Nasional (BN) and PH in the unity government.
He cited recent comments by Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim, who both cautioned Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim against appointing MPs facing ongoing court cases to the Cabinet.
“The time to issue fiery and rhetoric statements is over since the rakyat spoke through the ballot box (in the general election).
“Let me remind some individuals from PH not to be short-sighted and put the government of Anwar (Ibrahim) at risk,” he said in a statement.
Nur Jazlan pointed out that Malaysia’s justice system followed the notion of “innocent until proven guilty”, adding that those facing trial should be judged in a court of law rather than the court of public opinion.
He said BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was magnanimous in uniting the coalition’s MPs, despite the uneasiness of some, to support Anwar as the prime minister after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong said BN must be part of the unity government.
Zahid prioritised the interest of the nation to ensure a stable government was formed, he said.
“Zahid did not hold PH’s wild accusations and mudslinging against BN during the election campaign period against Anwar or PH and acted in good faith.
“Likewise, PH should repay Zahid’s earnestness by showing their genuine intention to make the new government stable and free from unnecessary politicking and criticisms that would hurt the long-term relationship between BN and PH,” he said.
Nur Jazlan called on all the members of the unity government to put their faith in Anwar and focus on the needs of the people.
Anwar leads a unity government comprising PH, BN, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), with support from MPs from Muda, Warisan, Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) and independents. - FMT
