Unfamiliarity could see Warisan facing Peninsula voter contempt

KUALA LUMPUR: Klang Valley voters are likely to shun Warisan mainly because they are unfamiliar with the Sabah-based party, if a random and quick FMT survey is anything to go by.

Several voters questioned Warisan’s motive for contesting in the peninsula.

Nurulhuda Tahir, 36, who will be voting in Wangsa Maju in the general election, said she knew of the party but did not know it was contesting in her area. “I don’t know who the candidate is.”

She also said she was wary of the party’s motives.

“I think Warisan is here to split the votes,” she said, adding she was surprised that there were “so many” candidates contesting in her area.

Warisan is running for 26 parliamentary seats in Peninsular Malaysia.

Former DAP and PKR man Wee Choo Keong is its candidate in a six-cornered fight in Wangsa Maju.

There were voters who had not even heard of Warisan.

G Nadaraj, 52, of Klang and R Viveghanantha, 34, of Kapar said they were unaware of Warisan’s existence and were therefore clueless about its candidates contesting in their areas.

R Viveghanantha.

Asked what she thought about a Sabah-based party seeking votes in Klang, Nadaraj said it did not make sense to her.

“What would the party know about Klang and its people and our history? I would be wary of such a party.”

Viveghanantha said he would not vote for Warisan even if the party chose to contest under the Pakatan Harapan banner.

“I would not vote for a candidate or a party I do not know,” he said, adding that Warisan’s presence would only confuse the voters.

Both Klang and Kapar will see seven-cornered fights. Warisan is fielding Loo Cheng Wee in Klang and Rahim Awang in Kapar.

Azmi Idris, 64, of Ampang said he was aware Warisan had a candidate in his area, but added: “It will not make any progress here and should focus on Sabah. Peninsular Malaysia is already congested with parties.”

Nine candidates are contesting in Ampang, with Warisan fielding Lai Wai Chong.- FMT
