Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin has hinted at a possible confidence and supply agreement (CSA) with the incoming unity government after confirming the coalition’s rejection of newly minted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s offer.
In a statement today, Muhyiddin thanked Anwar for extending an offer to PN for it to join the federal government under the Pakatan Harapan chairperson’s leadership.
However, he said PN is prepared for a different kind of cooperation with the government.
“In a bid to ensure political stability and the well-being of the people, PN is ready to pioneer other forms of cooperation with the government in matters pertaining to the relations between the government and the opposition.
“PN will play a role as an authoritative opposition to bring the voice of the people to Parliament and ensure the integrity and corruption-free governance of the government is in line with caring, clean and stable (PN) principles,” he added.
Previously, the administration led by former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob inked a bipartisan memorandum of understanding (MOU) on political transformation and stability with Harapan.
The MOU was intended for a political ceasefire between federal and opposition political coalitions, which saw three prime ministers in the span of three years due to political instability triggered by party-hopping and withdrawal of support by political parties to the prime minister.
This comes after several contradictory statements made by coalition leaders – from Bersatu and PAS - over the decision for PN to remain as opposition or to consider joining Anwar’s unity government.
PAS stands with Muhyiddin to remain in opposition
In a response to Malaysiakini, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man cleared the air, stressing that PAS stands with its coalition boss’ decision to remain as opposition.
Extending his congratulations to Anwar, Tuan Ibrahim said he hoped that the former would act fairly to all chosen MPs and ensure a balanced development among states.
“The PN chief’s statement is our stand. We pray for a prosperous, peaceful and harmonious country,” he said briefly.
Earlier, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said that the Islamist party would study Anwar’s invitation to join his unity government.
“PAS expresses our gratitude and we will discuss the matter with our PN component partners as well as seek feedback from the voters who have supported PAS and PN during the general election,” he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin thanked voters and its machinery for their hard work.
“The people’s extraordinary support for PN in GE15 proves that the aspirations of the crusade, brand and direction of PN are well received by Malaysians, especially young voters.
“Moving forward, all must persevere and be sincere in continuing the struggle through PN’s crusade, regardless of obstacles and challenges post GE15," he said.
PN secured 73 seats in the just concluded general election, making it the second largest bloc after Harapan with 82 seats. - Mkini
