PETALING JAYA: The plantation industries and commodities ministry has great potential to be self-sustainable and to generate money, says its former minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

In a statement, she suggested that her successor push for the consolidation of oil palm plantations and rubber estates under one roof to foster effective management.

She also suggested that the cooking oil subsidy programme be placed under the purview of the ministry rather than the domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry (KPDNHEP).

“I wish to propose the streamlining of the cooking oil subsidy programme under one single agency — the plantation industries and commodities ministry — for better distribution and price control.

“This will prevent overlapping and confusion as to which authority should have the final say on the pricing or price control mechanism of cooking oil,” she said.

Zuraida added that this would be a wise decision as KPDNHEP was overburdened by consumer affairs matters concerning numerous products.

She said it was crucial for the plantation industries and commodities ministry to be focused on spurring market expansion, product and service marketability, research and development as well as the application of innovative technology moving forward.

Zuraida had been plantation industries and commodities minister from August 2021 under Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s administration. - FMT
