Tremors in Semporna, Tawau after 6.1-magnitude quake hits Sulawesi

Tremors were felt in several areas in Sabah following a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the Minahassa peninsula in Sulawesi, Indonesia, at 12.25am today.

The meteorological department (MetMalaysia) said the earthquake was centred at coordinates 0.1 degrees South and 120.6 degrees East, at a depth of 10km, about 116km northeast of Palu, Indonesia.

In a Facebook post, MetMalaysia said tremors were felt in Tawau, Lahad Datu and Semporna, but the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

Tremors were also felt along parts of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia yesterday after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit northern Sumatra, Indonesia, at 6.54pm.

The earthquake came hours after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Flores Island in eastern Indonesia, followed by two strong aftershocks measuring 5.6 and 5.9, which killed at least 47 people and damaged hundreds of homes.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the fire and rescue department had reported tremors at nine locations across all five districts in Penang between 7.23pm and 7.27pm yesterday.

Tremors were also felt in Perak. - FMT
