Immediately after Malaysiakini published a report that Dyna Sofya Mohd Daud could be DAP's candidate for the Teluk Intan by-election, political rivals attempted to literally strip her credibility as a Muslim woman.
Several blogs posted photographs of a woman clad in a pink bikini and claimed that it was the political aide of DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang.
These blogs went on to questioned her character with regard to being a Muslim and wearing such revealing outfits.
However, netizens later clarified that the photos were that of Filipino actressPauleen Luna.
Dyana herself appears to be taking the attacks in her stride.
When a netizen asked on Twitter if she had seen the photo, she replied, "I did! That's why I said I wish I had that body! LOL. Need to work extra hard at the gym."
She later tweeted, "Hundreds of abusive calls and texts received since yesterday. Save your credit. I am unfazed. This is Dyana lah."
Gerakan sees red
Meanwhile, Gerakan is seeing red over the pink bikini and condemned such personal attacks.
"I am shocked to find out that such photos were circulated online in an attempt to tarnish her reputation.
"Such an act in my opinion is not only rude but also insulting to women in Malaysia," said party secretary-general Liang Teck Meng in a statement.
He added that Gerakan was of the view that politics should be fought based on principals, ideas and policies.
Gerakan is expected to field a candidate as well in the May 31 by-election. Speculation is rife that its president Mah Siew Keong will contest the seat.
The parliament seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Seah Loong Peng.
