It was a wedding that could have divorced Umno from power in Terengganu. But the prime minister said "love for the party" had conquered the misgivings.
And now with the Terengganu political crisis settled, Najib Abdul Razak will attend the wedding reception of ex-menteri besar Ahmad Said's daughter in Kemaman on Saturday.
He also blamed the brief crisis on miscommunication.
"The date for his daughter's wedding reception was not informed.
"We thought that things were over with the reception on May 10.
"We were not informed that there would be another function on May 17," he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani.
"This is a communication problem. It has been overcome and all explanations have been given," he added.
Furthermore, Najib said Ahmad had confided in him that the latter was "too much in love with Umno and cannot forget Umno".
In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, Ahmad had quit Umno, followed by two other state assemblypersons, hours after he was replaced as menteri besar.
Blaming Najib, the ex-MB said the prime minister was "heartless" because he had refused to listen to his (Ahmad's) request to postpone the replacement until after his daughter's wedding reception.
'Party's interest above all'
According to Bernama, the prime minister acknowledged that he was surprised to learn that Ahmad had quit the party.
"I felt that eventually he would realise that as party members, we are subject to party discipline. We must place the party's interests above everything else," he was quoted as saying.
Najib also expressed his appreciation to Ahmad, Ajil assemblyperson Ghazali Taib and Bukit Besi assemblyperson Roslee Daud (right) for having placed party interests first.
"I also wish to express my thanks to all the Terengganu BN assemblymen for having stated their undivided support for me and Ahmad Razif," he said in Putrajaya.
Asked whether the political developments in Terengganu would serve as a benchmark in facing challenges in the future, Najib said every situation differed.
"The important thing is to ensure discipline in the party. We have to maintain and strengthen this. No party will be successful without discipline," he emphasised.
