Shahidan refuses to quit over abduction case

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim has dismissed an opposition lawmaker’s call for him to resign over the latest abduction case in Sabah.
He was responding to Oscar Ling (DAP-Sibu) who demanded the minister to step down as the government had failed to stop the abduction.
The DAP MP claimed that corruption was one of the reasons for the failure of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) operations despite the government having spent billions on it.
"They have failed mainly due to abuse of power and corruption... My friend in Sabah says the enforcement team is not out there to arrest terrorists, but are aiming for money.
"They want to cari makan (earn a living) instead of protecting the people," he charged during the hour-long debate on an emergency motion regarding the abduction.
“To solve this, I propose that the minister responsible resigns If not, abductions will repeat every year. He must be responsible for that, let a new minister deal with the problem," he added.
In his winding up of the debate, Shahidan insisted that there is no reason for him to resign.
"You should resign, not me," he snapped at Ling.
"I am angry, because he thinks that the people cannot differentiate between billions and millions.
"You said (government spent) billions (for Esscom) and the minister has to resign," he added.
Shahidan then demanded the opposition lawmaker to list out the details of the spending that amounted to billions of public fund as claimed by the latter.
Last Friday, four Malaysians were abducted from a vessel in Ligitan waters by a group of armed gunmen.
So far, there has been no demands for ransom. -Mkini
