PETALING JAYA: Telekom Malaysia Bhd chairman Mohd Bakke Salleh will become the new chairman of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), the Prime Minister’s Office announced today.
Bakke will be taking over from Ahmad Nizam Salleh, who was appointed the new Pelaburan Hartanah Berhad (PHB) chairman. Their appointments will take effect on Aug 1.
Prior to being TM chairman, Bakke had also served as Felda chairman and managing director of Sime Darby Plantation Bhd (SDP).
He had been with SDP for close to nine years, after joining the Sime Darby group as its acting president and group chief executive officer in 2010. He also previously served as FGV Holdings Bhd (then Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd) president and CEO.
He had also been the chairman of 1MDB and resigned twice from his post, citing dissatisfaction with the company’s management, according to the then Public Accounts Committee vice-chief Tan Seng Giaw.
He had first resigned as 1MDB chairman in April, 2009 before being reappointed and then leaving the post again in October the same year.
The PMO said Bakke was a widely experienced corporate figure who had served in various economic and financial fields.
“The government is continuing its programme to transform government-linked companies to ensure they remain strong and prepared in facing the post-Covid-19 recovery phase in the new normal.
“Changes will be implemented from time to time,” it said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Nizam has served as Petronas chairman for three years and brings with him 37 years of working experience in the oil and gas company. He will remain chairman of the KLCC group of companies. - FMT
