Kedah police are investigating an MP from the state for allegedly violating the standard operating procedure (SOP) against Covid-19.
Police did not name the MP but Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar (above) has been receiving social media attention over a photograph of him eating at a table with a group of people after distributing aid to the local community.
Kota Setar district police chief Ahmad Shukri Mat Akhir, in a statement, said cops received a police report over the social media photographs about an aid programme where the MP appeared to have failed to abide by the SOPs.
He said the matter is being investigated under Regulation 11(1) and Regulation 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) Regulations (No 4) 2021.
Regulation 11(1) concerns the offence of gathering in public places while Regulation 17(1) is for failing to wear a face mask and maintaining social distance during the pandemic.
Mahfuz was seen pulling his mask down to his chin.
When contacted, he said police had yet to contact him but was prepared to cooperate.
The Amanah lawmaker added that he hopes to be treated like everyone else.
"I don't want people to say that I get special treatment because I am an MP and a former deputy minister.
"So, expedite the case. If there is a need to pay a compound, state how much," Mahfuz said. - Mkini
