Grassroots will punish Umno ministers supporting Muhyiddin, says Puad

PETALING JAYA: Umno Cabinet ministers were prioritising their self-interest when they decided to continue supporting Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister, says party Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi.

Puad said ministers and deputy ministers from Umno should not make decisions that contradicted those of the party, which withdrew its support for Muhyiddin a week ago.

He told FMT the latest development had revealed the true colours of those involved.

“They cannot claim to prioritise the rakyat because Umno’s stance was made to protect the people, a result of the prime minister’s failure in managing the economy and pandemic.

“After all, Umno’s Supreme Council has decided that its MPs can remain in the PN (Perikatan Nasional) government until the next parliamentary meeting begins,” he said.

Puad also said Umno had had enough of those who did not abide by the party’s leadership, adding that it was not unusual for several camps to exist within a party.

“Eventually, the members will punish them. Usually, those who turn their backs on the party are the losers.

“If they are brave enough to commit political suicide, then go ahead. I am confident that nearly 95% of Umno members reject Bersatu and supporting Muhyiddin means supporting Bersatu.”

Yesterday, in a joint statement, Cabinet ministers gave their full support for Muhyiddin to remain as prime minister and continue leading the country.

On July 8, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the party was withdrawing its support for Muhyiddin, urging the prime minister to resign from his post so that an interim prime minister could be appointed.

This decision has yet to affect the position of Umno members who are part of the Cabinet, including newly appointed deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob. - FMT
