Infectivity rate hits 1.16 nationwide, most states and territories over 1

 

The last time the infectivity rate was below 1 was on June 27.

PETALING JAYA: The national infectivity rate (R0) has now reached 1.16, the culmination of a month of steady increase that has coincided with rising cases.

In a Facebook post, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah shared infection data for the 30 days from June 13, which showed cases briefly dip towards the last week of June, before trending upwards and culminating with the record numbers seen in the last week.

June 27 was the last time the R0 was below 1.

Of the 16 states and territories, only Labuan, Sarawak and Perlis have estimated R0 values lower than 1, which suggest case numbers should drop in these areas.

These three states also happen to have the highest rates of fully vaccinated adults.

Putrajaya (1.35), Terengganu (1.26) and Selangor (1.19) have the highest R0 values, and five other areas have R0 values above 1.1.

The infectivity rate is a measure of how many people on average an infected case will transmit the virus to. A number above 1 suggests cases will increase, and anything below suggests they will fall. - FMT
