Kelantan Health Dept prepares for rise in Covid-19 cases ahead of festivities

The Kelantan Health Department is preparing for a possible increase in Covid-19 cases ahead of the Hari Raya Aidiladha on July 20.

Coincidentally, Kelantan also began to see some easing of restrictions as it moved into Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan today, although interstate and inter-district travels are still banned.

"Preparations have been made at all hospitals, health clinics and even at Covid-19 low-risk quarantine and treatment centres (PKRCs) in case Covid-19 cases rise again," Kelantan health director Dr Zaini Hussin (above) was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.

He cautioned that amid the rise of new, more virulent Covid-19 variants, out-of-state people returning to Kelantan during the festive season could lead to a surge in cases.

Even though interstate travel is restricted, people have flouted the rules during previous festivities.

Zaini stressed that the people should not let their guard down even though cases in the state have gone down.

The seven-day average of new daily Covid-19 cases in Kelantan was at 120 as of yesterday, below the 234-threshold for Phase 2.

"The small number of Covid-19 cases recorded at the state level does not mean we can be complacent.

"This is a challenge for the department and for the people. This is not the time they can have fun.

"They must continue to obey the standard operating procedures (SOP)," Zaini was quoted as saying.

Apart from Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perak and Perlis also entered Phase 2 today.

Phase 2 allows more businesses to operate but most restrictions on the non-business sectors remain. - Mkini
