Amid a show of online and on the ground solidarity, activist Sarah Irdina Mohammad Ariff has been released from police custody about 1am today, after being questioned for 10 hours over allegations of sedition and improper use of network facilities over social media posts by a youth-based group Misi Solidariti about the #Lawan movement.
Sarah's lawyer Goh Cia Yee tweeted about her release from the Jinjang police lock-up where Sarah had been detained since earlier yesterday evening.
"Sarah's just been released. Was present with Sarah today at the police station.
"Cracked some jokes to make her feel at ease but it was her first time being questioned by the police.
"My respect to her and her friends for the work they are doing," Goh said.
Goh also noted the show of solidarity as #FreeSarah trended on Twitter, aside from a candlelight vigil organised by PSM Youth outside the Jinjang police station lock-up.
It was reported yesterday that officers from Bukit Aman's Prosecution and Law Division (D5) had arrested the 20-year-old activist after Sarah went through a round of questioning at the Dang Wang district police station.
Police also confiscated her mobile phone, and she was initially expected to be remanded overnight in a lock-up.
The founder of Misi Solidariti is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Sarah's arrest and the questioning of three others were done ahead of tomorrow's #Lawan protest in Kuala Lumpur, the protest organisers noted.
According to Undi18 co-founder Qyira Yusri, one of Sarah's tweets, which has been in contention from July 1, simply stated the #Lawan movement's demands for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to resign, for Parliament to convene and for the emergency to end. - Mkini
