Amanah calls for PM and his 'arrogant' cabinet to step down

Amanah has called for the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Perikatan Nasional's "arrogant" cabinet after his office defended his decision not to revoke the emergency ordinances through a vote in Parliament.

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu (above) expressed regret that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) last night said Muhyiddin had, contrary to the palace's statement, advised the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to annul the emergency ordinances even before the special Parliament sitting convened on July 26.

"Amanah demands full accountability from Muhyiddin over the act of treason towards the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and for all deceptions by the cabinet on the supremacy of the cabinet and Parliament.

"Therefore, Amanah calls for the immediate resignation of Muhyiddin and his entire cabinet, and to seek forgiveness from the Agong," Mohamad said in a statement today.

Mohamad cited a PMO statement last night that defended Muhyiddin's decision after a royal reprimand for failing to act in line with the Federal Constitution.

"The PMO statement shows his arrogance and that of the entire cabinet with regards to the advice and critic by the Agong as revealed in the palace's statement yesterday.

"Muhyiddin and his cabinet are trying to defend the indefensible by claiming that they had carried out their duties in the proper manner in relation to the disputed revocation of emergency ordinances," he added.

Mohamad further said Muhyiddin's statement appears to imply the Agong's failure to understand the real situation and had made a mistake when expressing his disappointment.

"Muhyiddin then tries to blame the opposition as if we were the ones creating confusion in this matter," he added.

The palace, in its statement, said de facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan and Attorney-General Idrus Harun failed to fulfil their promise to the Agong to have the matter debated in Parliament.

The palace said the Agong was "amat dukacita" (very disappointed) that Parliament was informed on July 26 that the ordinances were revoked.

It added that the Agong was also "very disappointed" with Takiyuddin and Idrus' conduct.

Others who had called for Muhyiddin and the cabinet's resignation included opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla and former minister Rafidah Aziz. - Mkini
