KUALA LUMPUR: The Pakatan Harapan presidential council said it will not table any confidence motion against the Prime Minister in the upcoming Special Sitting of the Dewan Rakyat.

As such the pact urged the Perikatan Nasional government and Lower House of Parliament speaker to allow the member of parliaments (MPs) to make available space for debate to take place in the upcoming proceedings of the lower house of Parliament.

In a statement today, they urged government to stop abusing the nation's democratic institutions which goes against the Federal Constitution.

"Yang di-Pertuan Agong had on June 16 said the Parliament sitting should reconvene as soon as possible to allow MPs to debate on emergency ordinance, the National Recovery Plan and budgets regarding Covid-19 pandemic.

"The King had voiced out the same view on Feb 24 and June 29. His Majesty's view is in line with rakyat aspirations who wants to end the Covid-19 pandemic crisis and the economic recession faced by the country," said the statement from Pakatan Harapan.

The joint statement was signed by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

They said in upholding the King's view, the opposition leader had on July 12 submitted a motion to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker on the matters involving the August House.

"No confidence motion against the Prime Minister will be tabled by the Pakatan Harapan.

"The Dewan Rakyat Speaker had issued a statement on July 15, saying that the Parliament sitting from July 26 to Aug 2 is a special session to listen to explanations by the ministers without debate from the MPs.

"Therefore, Pakatan Harapan urged the Dewan Rakyat Speaker and the Perikatan Nasional government not to go against Yang di-Pertuan Agong's view to allow debate so that the Parliament can function again."

The "special sitting" in the lower House of Parliament will take place from July 26 to July 29 and Aug 2, while the Senate will sit for three days from Aug 3 to Aug 5.

The Dewan Rakyat will only resume its regular session with debates and voting from Sept 6. - Star
