The opposition was livid yesterday when Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was absent from the Dewan Rakyat for the winding-up debate on the National Recovery Plan (NRP).
However, Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has offered an explanation on the prime minister’s absence.
In a midnight Facebook posting, Sanusi said the prime minister had chaired a National Security Council virtual meeting from 3pm to 6pm to discuss the Covid-19 pandemic.
Based on a screen capture of the meeting, others who were present include Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, Health Minister Dr Adham Baba, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, and Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin.
The winding-up of the NRP, handled by the plan’s coordinating minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, began at 4.30pm.
Zafrul handling the wind-up caused a massive uproar, as opposition MPs had demanded answers from the prime minister.
“Never before in history - since Independence, since the establishment of Parliament - where questions to the prime minister and emergency are answered by the finance minister,” opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
Eventually, Zafrul was allowed to continue with the wind-up speech. - Mkini
