Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has suffered a round of online ridicule following news that he was hospitalised for diarrhoea.
Earlier today, his office released a brief statement saying he was warded at a Kuala Lumpur hospital for treatment and observation.
Not only did the issue make international headlines, but it also spawned the hashtags #PMCirit (Diarrhoea PM) and #KerajaanCirit (Diarrhoea government).
#PMCirit remained a Twitter trending topic as of 10pm tonight after it was mentioned in more than 24,000 tweets.
Some speculated whether the surprising announcement had anything to do with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s repeated calls for Parliament to reconvene.
Muhyiddin usually has an audience with His Majesty before his Wednesday cabinet meetings. Both events were postponed today due to his condition.
Muhyiddin’s situation further provided inspiration for graphic artists, comedians, and other creative individuals.
Comic artist Ernest Ng immortalised the situation in the latest installment of his “Covidball Z” comic.
Political graphic designer Fahmi Reza also created posters for both hashtags.
Coincidentally, anti-diarrhoea medication manufacturer Smecta issued a press statement today announcing its July 8 public awareness campaign featuring comedians Douglas Lim, Kavin Jay, Joanne Kam, and Papi Zak.
Some posted memes showing Malaysia reported “one confirmed case” of diarrhoea today along with 6,276 Covid-19 cases.
Others shared doctored images of Muhyiddin holding up a sign saying he had diarrhoea instead of the actual “I have been vaccinated” slogan.
In one satirical video, the chorus of Michael Jackson’s song “Beat It” was replaced with the lyrics “aku kena cirit birit” (I have diarrhoea).- Mkini
