RM265,000 heroin found hidden in coconut lorry

Police stopped the lorry at a roadblock at Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway and found RM265,000 worth of heroin inside.

GEORGE TOWN: When policemen stopped a lorry transporting coconuts at a roadblock here, they found more than they bargained for. Hidden among the fruits was 24kg of heroin with a street value of RM265,000.

Penang police chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said two men aged 26 and 32 were arrested at the roadblock at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway at 10.05am yesterday.

The drugs were loaded in 53 small packages tucked under the seats of the lorry.

The operation led to the arrest of another 35-year-old lorry driver in Rungkup, Perak, who is believed to be the leader of the syndicate. All three men have been remanded until July 23 to be investigated for trafficking drugs.

It is believed all three were part of a syndicate smuggling drugs using goods lorries.

Separately, Shuhaily said five men aged between 22 and 46 were arrested in Gelugor over the weekend for possession of marijuana and heroin valued at RM83,000 mostly from a lorry, while the rest were found in an apartment and a Perodua Myvi.

A remand application has been made to investigate the five men for trafficking.

In an unrelated case, police seized 66 pieces of jewellery valued at RM284,000 from a safety locker in an undisclosed location at Seberang Perai Central, believed to be purchased through drug money.

Shuhaily said the case was related to a drug raid last Monday where RM1.47 million worth of drugs such as syabu and heroin were found in two separate locations in Perai and Simpang Ampat. The total amount of drugs, cash and properties seized stands at RM2.8 million. Four suspects in the case are still under remand. - FMT
