KOTA KINABALU: A 47-year-old man who held a thanksgiving feast at his house is likely to have sparked a new cluster in Tuaran, Sabah involving 17 cases so far.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the Kampung Pukak cluster stemmed from a thanksgiving feast which was attended by the immediate family members at the index case's home on July 3 and had spread among the community.
"The index case had been having symptoms of fever, cough and cold since July 7 and was tested positive for Covid-19 on July 9.
"Of the 55 close contacts screened, 16 cases were detected positive, bringing the cumulative total of positive cases of this cluster to 17 cases including nine new cases today.
"The screening involved close contacts from Kampung Pukak, Kampung Pinagon, and Telibong Water Plant Quarters 1," he said in his daily statement.
Today, Sabah recorded 657 new infections bringing the cumulative number of cases to 76,453 cases. Two fatalities were recorded each in Kota Belud and Tawau.
Masidi said of the 657 cases, 317 from existing and new clusters, 199 were from close contacts, 71 from symptomatic screenings, 47 from targeted screenings while 23 from other screenings.
"Kota Kinabalu topped the list with 248 cases followed by Tawau (137 cases). However, both districts' cases were mostly contributed by the existing clusters," he said.
Meanwhile, 285 Covid-19 patients had recovered and were discharged from hospitals today, taking the cumulative recoveries in the state to 71,748.
On the vaccination programme, 14 first doses and 20,608 second doses were administered to the public today.
"Another 7,873 individuals signed up for the vaccine, bringing the total number of registrants to 1,006,068," he added.
On Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) violations, Masidi said 37 compounds have been issued across the state for various Covid-19 SOP violations and Sabah recorded an overall SOP compliance rate of 95.5 per cent. - NST
