PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional said it is ready to provide infrastructure such as charging stations across the country to support electric vehicles, as part of Malaysia’s drive towards decarbonisation.

“We are very serious on the EV front,” said TNB’s chief strategy and ventures officer Fazlur Rahman Zainuddin at a round-table meeting of energy industry leaders today.

“In line with the government’s low-carbon agenda, we are keen to work with any private-sector party that wants to transition to electric mobility,” he said.

Fazlur said TNB had already installed 73 charging stations for electric vehicles at 31 locations last year, together with the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre.

The company also signed an agreement with courier company DHL Express recently to install EV charging stations along DHL’s key service route. He said this move would help the logistics company advance the electrification of its fleet in the future.

Fazlur said the transport industry accounted for 21% of Malaysia’s total carbon dioxide emissions in 2016.

He added that electric mobility would be an “economic game changer” for the country as new technology would stimulate high-value economic activity.

The government is expected to announce a national policy on electric vehicles this month which is expected to include tax reductions that might cut prices of electric vehicles by half.

In May, the head of the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute, Madani Sahari, said the government has prepared an acceleration policy on EV which would include huge tax exemptions for manufacturers.

Users would generally enjoy benefits in terms of direct incentives either in the form of road tax, green parking scheme, charging installation as well as toll rebates, he said.

He said the electric vehicle policy was being taken to the Cabinet and he hoped it would be announced in July. - FMT
