Two cops detained over alleged extortion

Petaling Jaya police have detained two of its personnel accused of extorting a 27-year-old man in an incident late last night.

Petaling Jaya police chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the victim was on his way to work with a colleague when he was stopped by a police patrol car at 11.30pm on July 15.

“The personnel in question told the complainant that he was breaking the standard operating procedures (SOP) of the current movement control order as he was riding in a vehicle that exceeded the number of persons allowed,” Fakhrudin said in a statement today.

The street light maintenance worker was allegedly told to contact his employer and to hand over his phone to the police personnel so that he could speak to the worker’s employer.

The police personnel had also allegedly asked the worker to pay RM200 in cash, which led to the victim posting his dissatisfaction over the incident on Twitter.

Fakhrudin said a police report was lodged at 1am today and a team from the district’s criminal investigation department acted on the information - which led to the arrest of two police personnel stationed at the Petaling Jaya police station.

He added that the two police personnel will be remanded and investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code.

A violation of Section 384 of the Penal Code could lead to up to 10 years imprisonment, a fine, whipping, or any two of the aforementioned punishments.

“The police will not compromise (its values) for any police personnel and officers that commit a criminal offence.

“The district police chief calls for the public to lodge a police report if it is found that any police personnel or police officer is involved in any criminal misconduct,” added Fakhrudin. - Mkini
