Umno aims guns at Muhyiddin but may not seek to dismantle PN govt

Umno may have set its sights on ousting Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister but this does not necessarily mean it wants to dismantle the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, who endorsed Umno's decision to retract its support for Muhyiddin, emphasised that the withdrawal of support was targeted at Muhyiddin and not the PN government.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who yesterday announced the withdrawal, also stressed that the party won't accept a new government led by Pakatan Harapan.

This reduced the possible options, suggesting that Umno may seek to take over the leadership of the government without drastic changes to the parties in the ruling coalition.

Najib (above) proposed for an interim government to take over, which would serve no more than six months, and would dedicate itself to managing the Covid-19 pandemic, which he claimed the PN government had failed to do.

"I am of the view that the Umno supreme council's decision to withdraw support for Muhyiddin (not withdraw support for the PN government) and make way for an interim administration with a set term and objective to resolve Covid-19, help the people, and achieve herd immunity through vaccination before Parliament is dissolved - to be the most apt decision," he said in a statement on Facebook today.

The Pekan MP added that replacing an unstable government with another unstable government was not the solution.

"That is why the interim government should have a term limit and clear goals," he said.

Besides, he added that the general election is also due in around two years.

"Umno and BN do not fear to face the people when the time comes.

"If PN and Harapan believe they have strong support from the people and that they have performed well while in government, then there is no need to fear the people when the time comes," he said.
