Component parties in the Perikatan Nasional-led government today cautioned against “abusing” the upcoming Parliament session in a joint-statement that notably excluded Umno.
The statement by the information chief of the component parties included all of Umno’s BN partners, namely MCA, MIC and PBRS.
“We hope that the special parliamentary sitting will be fully used to discuss about the rakyat’s interest and will not be misused for personal interest,” they said.
The joint statement was signed off by the information chiefs of PN (Bersatu, PAS, SAPP, Star, Gerakan), BN (MIC, MCA, PBRS), GPS (PBB, PRS, PDP, SUPP) and PBS.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on July 7 announced that his party was withdrawing its support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
However, Attorney-General Idrus Harun said Muhyiddin can continue as prime minister because his majority cannot be determined by a party statement.
Instead, he said it must be determined by MPs, which turns the attention to the upcoming Parliament session on July 26.
With Umno’s support, Muhyiddin is estimated to have a four-MP majority.
Umno has 38 MPs but not all are supportive of their party’s decision to ditch Muhyiddin.
A strong Umno backer of Muhyiddin is Bera MP Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who was appointed by Muhyiddin as deputy prime minister hours before Zahid announced Umno’s decision.
Another supporter is Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein who was appointed as a senior minister.
The PN information chiefs, in their statement today, congratulated Ismail and Hishammuddin on their appointments.
They also welcomed the upcoming Parliament sitting in line with the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong’s call to reconvene Parliament as soon as possible.
“It is a wise move so that an accurate explanation can be given to the MPs,” he said. - Mkini
