PETALING JAYA: A former federal minister believes that Umno is planning a “quiet coup” against the government through newly minted deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Mujahid Yusof Rawa said this is based on Umno’s announcement that it was retracting support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Mujahid said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was pushing for an interim government.
He said Zahid had clearly stated that Umno would call for a general election once the nation achieved herd immunity.
By then, the Amanah MP said, Umno would be in a strong position and confident of winning handsomely.
He said Muhyiddin would be pushed to resign “in the next day or two” and Ismail would be the acting prime minister and possibly appointed the interim PM.
Hishammuddin Hussein, who was also promoted to senior minister on Wednesday, would be the deputy prime minister, he said.
“The majority of Umno MPs will continue to support Perikatan Nasional until Parliament is dissolved. The government won’t collapse, but Umno will remain dominant,” the former religious affairs minister said.
Zahid had called for Muhyiddin to resign when announcing that Umno was formally retracting support for him on grounds that the government had failed to fulfil the requirements the party had set to justify support for the administration.
The announcement was made after a Supreme Council meeting at the party’s headquarters on Wednesday night, hours after Ismail and Hishammuddin were appointed to their new posts. - FMT
