What ‘major news’? KJ says Fahmi overhyped egg price announcement

PETALING JAYA: Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has slammed government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil for overhyping the recent announcement on the reduction of egg prices.

Khairy said while the communications minister’s pre-announcement led the public to expect “major news”, it turned out to be a three sen reduction in the price of eggs.

He said Fahmi should “stay in his lane” and avoid unnecessary pre-announcements that could erode public goodwill and embarrass Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“It was an absolute disaster,” the former Umno Youth chief said.

“It should have been good news which would have increased support for the government and the prime minister.

“So, a communication failure … 100% communication failure due to that very ‘gedik’ (eager) government spokesperson,” said Khairy in the latest episode of his “Keluar Sekejap” podcast.

On Saturday, Fahmi said Anwar was expected to deliver “good news” regarding food items to the public on Sunday.

However, the announcement came a day late, with Anwar announcing a reduction in the retail prices of Grade A, B, and C eggs by three sen each across the country as part of efforts to pass on savings from targeted subsidies to the public.

In a separate matter, podcast co-host Shahril Hamdan said there is no need for Azizi Abu Naim to take the Nenggiri seat vacancy to court.

This comes after the Kelantan assembly speaker declared the seat vacant after being notified by Bersatu that Azizi had ceased to be a member of the party. Azizi responded by saying that he planned to take legal action.

Azizi, who is also the MP for Gua Musang, is among six Bersatu MPs who pledged support for Anwar and the unity government. The others are Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar) and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).

Selat Klang assemblyman Abdul Rashid Asari had also declared support for the Selangor unity government led by menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

Shahril also said the unity government should not fear a by-election as Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has claimed that the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election showed a shift in Malay support towards Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional.

PH candidate Pang Sock Tao won the by-election with a 3,869-vote majority. At the time, Asyraf said PH had recaptured six of eight Malay-majority electoral districts in the constituency which Perikatan Nasional had won in last year’s state election.

Shahril, who is also the former Umno information chief, said the government has a moral duty to uphold the spirit of the anti-hopping law and urged the government to honour the original constitutional amendment. - FMT
