BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has stressed that he will not be involved in any proposal to establish an umbrella body similar to the United Chinese School Committee Association (Dong Zong) but for bumiputera NGOs.
The deputy prime minister also said he would not be bothered with leaders who are crazy for power, using the Malay term "gila talak".
“I do not want to be involved with any gila talak leaders,” he said briefly during a press conference after the Selangor BN Convention in Shah Alam today.
Zahid was responding to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s proposal yesterday to establish a body similar to Dong Zong for the bumiputera.
The Perikatan Nasional chairperson said the establishment of such a body would ensure a clearer leadership structure in efforts to champion the interests of the Malay-bumiputera community.
Flood: Emergency declaration unnecessary
Meanwhile, Zahid also said a declaration of emergency is unnecessary to handle the worsening floods in several states.
The deputy prime minister, who also chairs the National Disaster Management Committee, said this is because all state and national government machinery have been mobilised to respond.
Zahid also hoped the floods would subside as forecasted by the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), especially at locations in Kelantan and Terengganu where the situation was reportedly worrying.
“I hope that the forecast by MetMalaysia will be true, where they expect rain to start subsiding by next week.
“If this happens, then the floods will also subside and we are confident that fewer people would have to be evacuated to the temporary shelters,” he said.
However, Zahid also reminded those who live in flood-prone areas to listen to authorities’ advice, especially when ordered to evacuate.
He said government preparedness alone is not enough to save lives during floods, and urged victims to evacuate early as instructed. - Mkini
