An Umno veteran has hit out at Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar for not joining Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday to oversee the flood situation in the state.
Umno Veterans Club secretary Mustapha Yaakub in a statement described Samsuri’s decision to attend the Bersatu annual general assembly in Selangor as a sign of disrespect.
“He (Samsuri) cannot tell the difference between a deputy prime minister’s official visit and an invitation from a political party.
“He is prioritising his political allies over his people suffering from the floods,” he claimed.
Mustapha argued that while Zahid did not need to be welcomed as a guest and treated with nasi dagang during his visit, the Umno president still deserved to be met by the state’s menteri besar, despite being from a different party.
He said Zahid, who is also the rural and regional development minister, had to sort out his schedule to make it to Terengganu after visiting Kelantan yesterday.
“The difference is that Zahid prioritised the people of Terengganu, while Samsuri prioritised his political allies,” claimed Mustapha.
Zahid, who also chairs the National Disaster Management Committee, was accompanied by Kelantan Menteri Besar Mohd Nassuruddin Daud on his visit to the state.
In Kelantan, the number of flood evacuees in 284 temporary relief centres has reached 96,743 people from 29,928 families, up from 93,158 last night.
Based on the Welfare Department’s Disaster Info Portal, Pasir Mas continues to report the highest number of evacuees at 29,370, followed by Tumpat (17,680), Kota Bharu (14,154), Pasir Puteh (9,870), and Kuala Krai (6,614).
In Terengganu, the number of flood evacuees continued to rise to 43,281 this morning, compared to 41,409 last night. - Mkini
