Women more likely to fall victim to love scams, say police

KUALA LUMPUR: Women are more frequently targeted in love scam cases than men, due to emotional manipulation and the sophisticated tactics employed by fraud syndicates, according to the police.

Statistics from Bukit Aman's Commercial Crime Investigation Department show that 977 love scam cases involving losses of RM43 million were reported from the beginning of the year until November.

"The figures show a 37 per cent increase in love scam cases this year compared with 715 cases last year.

"Financial losses also rose by four per cent, from RM41 million last year," the department said in a statement posted on its official Facebook page today.

The CCID said scam syndicates typically establish fake relationships through online platforms before deceiving victims into handing over money.

"The scammers often avoid face-to-face meetings or video calls, claim to be working overseas, and request money for reasons such as emergencies, gifts held at customs, or business projects," it said.

The public has been advised not to easily trust individuals newly met on social media platforms.

"Do not send money or share personal information, and do not be easily enticed by promises of gifts.

"Victims are also encouraged to seek advice from family members or friends, or lodge a police report by contacting the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) hotline at 997," it added. - NST
