SARAWAK is prepared to step up shipments of live pigs to Selangor after the Sultan of Selangor moved to prohibit pig farming across the state.
The Minister for Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, said Sarawak had already started sending live pigs to Selangor last year.
He added that the state is willing to supply other states as well should there be demand for imports.
This news couldn’t have arrived at a more timely moment since Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah recently declined to allow pig farming in any district in Selangor, citing environmental concerns and the potential impact of pollution on nearby communities.

“Good. Win-win situation. The people of Selangor get to eat pig. The people of Sarawak get income,” said @abamloh while @hcsoon jokingly said that Selangor should reciprocate by exporting Gardenia bread.
“Smart sarawak. Suddenly local industry booming from upstream to downstream,” added @Bryan58376943. The news has since prompted several people to consider migration to Sarawak.
But @khagan87 further suggested that Sarawak process the pig meat and export it over instead of the need to maintain an abattoir in Peninsular Malaysia.
Another netizen pointed out the ample area in Sarawak which was suitable to establish a mega pig farm.
On the future of the industry locally, Dr Rundi noted that Sarawak currently has a mix of smaller farms and more advanced operations. He also highlighted the presence of three large modern farms situated in Simunjan, Ensengei and Selangau. —Focus Malaysia
