PAPAR: A 44-year-old man was arrested for allegedly harassing several female students near a school in Kinarut here yesterday.
In the 10.30am incident, the suspect had allegedly approached the students, pulling their hands and grabbing them under the pretext of wanting to send them to school.
The incident went viral on social media, sparking widespread concern among the local community, especially students and parents.
District police chief Superintendent Heryan Mohd Tahir said police arrested the suspect about 6.30pm the same day after receiving several reports lodged over the incident.
"All incidents occurred in open areas, and no students were abducted. While no physical injuries were reported, the incidents caused fear among the students and the local community.
"Initial investigations are also considering the possibility that the suspect may be suffering from health issues, but this is still being investigated," he said when contacted yesterday.
Heryan said the case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
He advised the public against making speculations or spreading unverified information that could disrupt investigations or cause public anxiety.
"Strict action can be taken against any party found spreading fake news," he said. - NST
