PETALING JAYA:
A total of 280 police reports had been lodged as of yesterday over an online caricature deemed insulting to Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, uploaded on April 25.

State police chief Shazeli Kahar said the reports were lodged nationwide by various parties condemning what he described as an extreme act of provocation.

“Investigations are currently being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955,” Bernama reported him as saying today.

These provisions relate to the improper use of network facilities, sedition, and insult with intent to breach the peace.

Shazeli advised the public to leave the matter to the authorities and refrain from comments or speculation that could disrupt the investigation.

Several parties, including Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, state executive councillors, and NGOs, previously called on the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to take firm action over the post deemed insulting to the Selangor sultan. - FMT
