MACC confirms Rafizi to be called on Monday

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today confirmed that it will call Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli on Monday to assist in investigations into alleged abuse of power and misappropriation involving a RM1.1 billion investment deal.

MACC senior investigations director Datuk Mohd Hafaz Nazar said the former economy minister is expected to have his statement recorded at the Putrajaya MACC headquarters about 10am on May 4.

The probe centres on a strategic collaboration agreement between the Economy Ministry and chip design firm Arm Holdings involving the semiconductor industry.

"So far, a total of 22 statements have been recorded, including from ministers and senior officers from several government agencies since investigations began on Feb 13, 2025," Hafaz said.

He added that political analyst James Chai, whose real name is Chai Jin Shern, had his statement recorded over three consecutive days starting last Tuesday.

Hafaz said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

Yesterday, Rafizi said he has been summoned by MACC for questioning over the government's joint venture with the chip design firm.

He said the investigation centres on allegations that he had pressured the cabinet to expedite approval of the deal, which critics claim was rushed and detrimental to the country.

Rafizi also denied any wrongdoing, stressing that there was no financial motive or monetary gain involved.

On April 30, Chai was seen arriving at the MACC headquarters for a third day to assist in the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 following complaints by several non-governmental organisations, which alleged that the agreement was made hastily and could have financial implications for the government.

The investigation is also examining possible elements of conflict of interest, including claims that certain individuals were appointed to senior positions in the foreign company after leaving a ministry. - NST
