The Community Communications Department (J-Kom) is expected to undergo another leadership change, with its director-general Ismail Yusop ending his service last Friday.
Ismail is the third individual to lead the agency since the Madani government took over Putrajaya.
The former PKR senator, better known as Tok Abah, confirmed that his tenure had been cut short as he is set to take on a new responsibility.
“Yes, that is correct. For your information, Tok Abah’s service as J-Kom director-general had to be ended earlier to enable me to be appointed to a new position.
“There is a new tasking, a new assignment to be carried out. God willing, I remain loyal and committed to advancing the Madani government’s agenda,” he told Malaysiakini when contacted this morning.
A source close to the PKR leadership said Ismail (above) was believed to have held a closed-door discussion with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim regarding his new assignment.

“We were informed that he held a private discussion with Anwar.
“After that, J-Kom was informed that he had been instructed to transfer to a new role,” said the source, who requested anonymity.
Last Friday, Ismail received a visit from Communications Ministry secretary-general Abdul Halim Hamzah at J-Kom headquarters in Putrajaya.
Although the meeting appeared to be a routine visit based on a Facebook post, J-Kom staff were later surprised by Ismail’s farewell address on the same day.
It is understood that the address was also delivered to staff via Google Meet.
Minister’s officer taking over?
Ismail was appointed J-Kom director-general in January last year, replacing Khairuddin Othman.
Khairuddin, who is also the Selangor PKR secretary, began leading J-Kom on March 1, 2023, after replacing Agus Yusof, the first holder of the post under the Madani administration.
In a related development, another source said an individual regarded as one of PKR’s new faces is being mentioned as a candidate to take over the position.

According to the source, the individual currently serves as an officer to a cabinet minister.
“The new J-Kom director-general is expected to join the Communications Ministry’s monthly assembly, which will be attended by the prime minister on Monday (tomorrow),” an internal J-Kom source said.
Malaysiakini has contacted the individual concerned for confirmation, but he declined to comment further.
Instead, he said: “So far, there is nothing in black and white.” - Mkini
