PETALING JAYA:
The International Regulatory Conference 2026 is set to convene this month, bringing together regulators, policymakers, industry leaders and experts to examine how Malaysia should govern its next phase of digital growth.

The conference, taking place on July 21-22 at Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and hosted by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is themed “Shaping the Next Digital Era: Regulation, Resilience and Trust”.

Its focus will be on the digital economy and regulatory issues in the communications and multimedia sector, positioning Malaysia as a leader in global telecommunications policy while strengthening MCMC’s role in international regulatory discourse.

The event aims to strengthen collaboration and develop forward-looking regulatory approaches that support innovation while safeguarding public interest in an increasingly digital society.

Discussions will centre on the intersection of technology and regulation, social media governance, data privacy, content moderation, and the development of future digital governance frameworks.

The programme also includes sessions on the Online Safety Act 2025, digital wellbeing, cybersecurity, and cross-border regulatory cooperation.

Among the featured speakers are MCMC commissioner Derek John Fernandez, Suhakam chief children’s commissioner Farah Nini Dusuki, Australian high commissioner Danielle Heinecke, International Telecommunication Union’s Sulyna Abdullah, and Aileen Chia of Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority.

International experts are expected to share perspectives on emerging technologies, platform governance, and building resilient digital ecosystems.

MCMC said the conference is intended to serve as a platform for dialogue on balancing innovation, economic growth, and consumer protection.

The event is also expected to support Malaysia’s efforts to build a trusted, inclusive, and future-ready digital economy. - FMT
