Pakatan Harapan will unveil their candidates for the Negeri Sembilan state election at 8pm tonight.
This will be the first time Harapan has contested the state solo since 2018 after having contested together with BN in the last election.
The Malaysian Media Council welcomed the government’s decision to refer the bill on the proposed Freedom of Information Act to a Parliament special select committee for refinement.
The bill had been criticised by civil society for restricting access to information and preserving the Official Secrets Act.
“The Media Council underlines that access to information underpins good journalism. Journalists cannot investigate matters of public interest, verify official claims, expose corruption and maladministration, or counter misinformation without timely and meaningful access to information held by public authorities.
“Independent journalism depends on facts, and facts depend on access to information. A strong Freedom of Information Act is therefore not only a democratic reform but a precondition for the ethical, professional, and accountable media that the Media Council Act 2025 seeks to secure,” the council said in a statement yesterday. - Mkini
