AG-PP bill: Govt to introduce extra provision; Albert to support MCA's Chennah candidate

AG-PP separation bill

  • The government is introducing an extra provision to improve its proposed bill to separate the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor (AG-PP), according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said.

She said the amendment would require the Judicial and Legal Service Commission to present only the name of the candidate recommended by the Dewan Rakyat to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"This step is taken to strengthen the system of checks and balances, without undermining the independence of the Public Prosecutor or the constitutional position of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," Azalina (above) said in a statement.

The improvement is part of seven suggestions made by a Parliamentary Special Select Committee, which will present its report to the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow.

Negeri Sembilan polls

  • Businessperson-turned-whistleblower Albert Tei has withdrawn his decision to contest in the upcoming Negeri Sembilan polls and instead will support MCA’s candidate for DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke’s Chennah seat.

“I have told (MCA’s) John Siow that I will stand beside him on nomination day this July 18.

“My friend, I vow to do everything I can to help BN oust Loke in the Chennah state seat and topple Pakatan Harapan in Negeri Sembilan,” Tei said in a statement today.

He said this comes after a discussion he had yesterday with MCA president Wee Ka Siong, during which Tei had promised to assist BN with its election campaign against Harapan’s “failures”.

  • BN will be refining its approach to the Negeri Sembilan election by factoring in the state’s demographics and voting trends, coalition chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

“We will announce the candidates this week," Bernama quoted him as saying after a rural and regional development ministry event in Kuala Lumpur today.

Commenting on reports of seat negotiations with PAS, the Umno president stressed that no official agreements have been finalised as ongoing talks revolve around a mutual understanding.

“But we will keep an eye on developments,” he added. - Mkini
