A Federal Court panel of three judges is set to deliver its decision on the Attorney-General’s Chambers appeal on Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman tomorrow.
The AGC had appealed against Syed Saddiq’s (above) full acquittal from two money laundering charges, one criminal breach of trust and one abetment charge under Section 406 of the Penal Code involving Bersatu’s funds.
The decision was previously scheduled to be delivered on June 30. However, proceedings were postponed to tomorrow, as one of the judges, Che Ruzima Ghazali, was on medical leave at that time.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court imposed a seven-year jail sentence, two strokes of cane and a RM10 million fine on Syed Saddiq in 2023. The Court of Appeal overturned the decision and completely acquitted him last year.
Pakatan Harapan had anticipated tough contests in Johor state polls, following the current momentum of support for the state government, said the coalition’s deputy chairperson Anthony Loke, in accepting their defeat in the state election.
Bernama reported him saying that, regardless, winning eight seats out of 56 shows that the pattern of support for Harapan remains intact.

Anthony Loke Despite the disappointment, Loke said the Johor election result should not be viewed as an absolute gauge, as each state has a different political landscape, issues and dynamics.
The DAP secretary-general also said that Harapan is now focused on preparing to defend its existing seats and strengthening public support in the upcoming Negeri Sembilan state polls.
Umno supreme council member Razlan Rafii thanked the people in Johor for rejecting the politics of “fear mongering” and incitement, noting that the public no longer falls for such tactics.
He acknowledged that DAP threatened to leave the government if reforms were not implemented within six months, which he claimed was a move merely intended to secure more ministerial and GLC chairperson posts for the party.
The people, he added, clearly see the choice here, on whether the party is standing up for the public or scrambling for the people’s wealth, he said in a statement to Malaysiakini.
ADSRazlan added that now, more than ever, is the time for the party to expose DAP’s true nature to the people, following Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming's “vow to resign” controversies.

The Home Ministry said it took note of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission’s (EAIC) report on recommendations to improve the management process for citizenship applications through naturalisation.
The ministry said it respected the checks and balances role of institutions established under the law and would review the recommendations to strengthen the ministry’s public service delivery system and governance.
In a statement, the ministry said it would examine EAIC’s findings and recommendations alongside relevant agencies, including the National Registration Department, the Immigration Department and the police, to identify areas for improvement.
These include strengthening standard operating procedures (SOPs), documentation, work processes and governance mechanisms, as well as providing continuous training for officers involved.

The ministry stressed that decisions on citizenship applications under Article 19 of the Federal Constitution were made based on legal provisions and careful consideration of factors including public interest, national security and the circumstances of each case. - Mkini
