BN winning in Johor state election

UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has announced that Barisan Nasional (BN) is currently leading in 49 Johor state assembly seats, while Pakatan Harapan (PH) is ahead in seven seats, based on early unofficial results from the Johor state election (PRN).

At the time of writing, early, unofficial results from the Johor PRN indicate Barisan Nasional (BN) is winning and has already enough seats to form the state government.

In Machap, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi was reported to be leading with 6,509 votes against PH’s Nor Hafiz Roslan, who secured 2,393 votes, based on unofficial tallies as of 7.30pm. A total of 8,902 ballots had been counted in the constituency, which has 35,206 registered voters.

Meanwhile, in Puteri Wangsa, PH candidate Dr Maszlee Malik was narrowly ahead with 677 votes (49.1%) compared to BN-MCA’s Teow Chia Ling with 583 votes (42.3%). Other candidates trailed significantly. Official results are pending confirmation by the Election Commission (SPR).

Early counts indicate BN has captured Perling, securing more than 27,300 votes – nearly double its support in 2022 when it managed 15,281 votes. At that time, Perikatan Nasional (PN) had won 8,829 votes.

This latest surge suggests BN not only retained its previous base but also absorbed PN’s support, adding roughly 3,000 new votes. BN has also reportedly taken two other PH bastions, Tangkak and Jementah, according to unofficial results.

These figures remain preliminary, with SPR yet to certify official outcomes.

Earlier BN was leading in nine out of the 17 seats contested by DAP in the 16th Johor PRN.

Based on the website managed by DAP as of 6.15pm, the nine seats are the State Legislative Assemblies (DUN) of Jementah, Bekok, Tangkak, Bentayan, Yong Peng, Mengkibol, Paloh, Johor Jaya, Perling, Bukit Permai, and Pekan Nenas.

Chants of “Maju Johor” rang out among UMNO members as Asyraf Wajdi announced the results.

According to unofficial counts from other sources, BN also appeared to be leading in PH strongholds such as Johor Jaya, Mengkibol and Bentayan. Bentayan and Mengkibol were among the seats BN lost in 2008.

Based on unofficial results, MCA was holding a significant lead in the early vote count in Paloh and Johor Jaya against DAP, with MCA garnering 1,200 votes compared with PH’s 178 votes, while PN trailed with 44 votes.

Meanwhile, in Johor Jaya, BN had garnered more than 1,300 votes against PH’s 387 votes.

It seems that smaller parties did not gain much support in the election, with the battle focused on BN and PH candidates.

The PRN was called after the Johor DUN was dissolved by Johor Menteri Besar Johor Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi on June 1.

Based on the Election Commission, a total of 1,693,625 out of 2,682,642 registered voters have fulfilled their respective responsibilities. —  Focus Malaysia
