Johor-bound traffic surges ahead of state election

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic heading into Johor surged tonight ahead of tomorrow's state election, with congestion reported along several major highways, including unusually heavy delays at the Singapore-Johor border.

As of 10pm, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) reported slow-moving traffic on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) southbound from Simpang Renggam Rest and Service Area to Sedenak, as well as from Ayer Keroh to Jasin.

Northbound traffic was also slow from Pandan to Dato' Onn and from Skudai to Sedenak, reflecting heavy cross-border and interstate travel.

The Malaysia-Singapore Second Link (Linkedua) also experienced unusually heavy traffic, with vehicles crawling northbound from Pulai Jaya to Senai as Singapore-registered vehicles and other motorists made their way into Johor ahead of polling day.

Elsewhere, congestion was reported on the Elite Expressway southbound from Ebor to USJ and from Bandar Serenia to Nilai Utara, while traffic on the North-South Expressway was also slow from the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Kajang to Bandar Ainsdale, Seremban to the Senawang lay-by, and from the Pedas Linggi lay-by to Pedas Linggi.

The build-up is expected to continue into the early hours as voters return home to cast their ballots in the Johor state election tomorrow.

Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys, monitor live traffic updates and drive cautiously, particularly when using emergency lanes, which are reserved for emergency vehicles, broken-down vehicles and SmartLane operations at designated locations. - NST
