MACC receives graft report against Johor polls candidate; Muda shuts down PN alliance talks

Johor polls

  • The MACC has received a corruption report involving a candidate in the ongoing Johor election.

“I will not comment further, but in this case, it involves a candidate,” Bernama reported the agency’s chief commissioner Abd Halim Aman as telling a press conference at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya today.

He was asked to comment on claims of corruption involving a candidate in Batu Pahat.

He said his commission has so far received three reports in total: one was lodged by the election campaign enforcement team in Batu Pahat, while the other two were from the public.

  • Muda president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said her party will not be cooperating with Perikatan Nasional to form the next Johor state government.

“The party is now focusing its time and energy to ensure that our candidates and those from the progressive bloc win at the state polls this Saturday,” she told Free Malaysia Today.

This comes after Astro Awani reported Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali as saying yesterday that an alliance between PN and Muda could lead to the formation of the next state government.

  • BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has welcomed PAS’ willingness to support his coalition in forming the next state government.

“Good. God willing, that’s okay,” Harian Metro quoted him as saying at a press conference in Kluang today.

Albert Tei

  • DAP organising secretary Khoo Poay Tiong has denied that businessperson Albert Tei was ever a member of the party, calling it a complete fabrication.

The denial came after Tei told an interview published in Sinchew Daily today that he joined DAP 10 years ago and was a hardcore supporter, but has become disillusioned with the party’s handling of the Sabah mining corruption scandal.

    Albert Tei

“After verifying with the party’s records, DAP never had anyone named Tei Jiann Cheing in the party membership roll.

“At the same time, he has not produced any evidence (such as a membership card, registration details, or related activity logs) to substantiate his past membership status,” Khoo said in a statement.

He urged Tei to immediately stop making “false rumours” about his alleged DAP membership.

1MDB trials

  • The High Court has fixed June 28 next year as the start of the civil action brought against Rosmah Mansor by 1MDB and 10 companies for allegedly receiving jewellery and other luxury goods bought with funds embezzled from the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund.

“The court also fixed Sept 28 to hear the plaintiffs’ application to amend the writ of summons and also the application for a Mareva injunction,” Rosmah’s counsel Rajan Navaratnam told Bernama.

Rajan added that judicial commissioner Muhammad Adam @ Edward Abdullah had scheduled the trial yesterday.

The hearing is scheduled to run from June 28 to July 2, July 5 to 9, and July 19 to 30 of next year.

OPR

  • Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has kept the overnight policy rate (OPR) at 2.75 percent.

According to Bernama, BNM said the Monetary Policy Committee views the decision as suitable due to its forecast for the stability of prices and sustainable economic development.

While the central bank said Malaysia saw resilient growth in the second quarter, thanks to consistent domestic demand and strong export performance, it warned that the ongoing conflict in West Asia could impact domestic inflation and growth.

However, it said Malaysia’s economic resilience against external headwinds will continue to be supported by its strong fundamentals.  - Mkini
