Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hazmah has confirmed his resignation from the Bersatu supreme council leadership line-up, saying he would now be giving his full focus to state governance and development matters.
In a press conference today, he said he decided to quit because he has been unable to attend the council meetings on several occasions.
Abu Bakar (above) added that several others may have also resigned but stopped short of sharing details.
"We have already submitted our letters. So there may be a few others as well, from what I understand, who have resigned. But as far as I know, it is me together with the Sena assemblyperson, who is also a Perlis exco.
"We discussed the matter in depth. As I have been unable to attend a number of meetings of the Bersatu supreme council, we decided to relinquish the positions for the time being and give our full commitment to serving Kangar Bersatu and Perlis Bersatu," he said.
Berita Harian reported that Sena assemblyperson Marzita Mansor submitted her resignation letter last week.
No pressure to resign
Malaysiakini had obtained a recording of the press conference, in which Abu Bakar said that there was no pressure or problems that led to his resignation.

"During my time as a member of the Bersatu supreme council, I received the best treatment from the president, the entire central leadership, and especially the Bersatu Malaysia headquarters. We have had no issues whatsoever.
"I do not think it will have any impact. This is a position at the central level within Bersatu. As for my service in Perlis, I must continue carrying out my duties in accordance with His Royal Highness' decree, as I explained earlier," he added.
Abu Bakar said he will now devote his full attention to Perlis to attract investors, as he must also deliver on several of his key performance indicators (KPIs) within the next few months of his tenure as menteri besar, until the end of his term.
"God willing, several proposals aimed at improving the people's well-being and advancing the state's development are being planned and will be rolled out in the near future," he added.
To a question on whether he will be joining another political party, Abu Bakar replied in the negative, stressing that he is bound by the Anti-Party Hopping Act.
"If I were to make such a mistake, I could face serious consequences as both a party member and the Kuala Perlis assemblyperson. It has nothing to do with that," he added. - Mkini
