Netizens urge outstation voters to return home despite costs

KUALA LUMPUR: A Threads post about the cost of travelling home to vote has prompted Malaysians to remind one another that casting a ballot is a civic responsibility despite the financial and logistical challenges.

The discussion began after a user, who lives in Johor Baru but remains a registered voter in Ledang, said she had to weigh expenses such as petrol, food and vehicle servicing before deciding whether to return home to vote.

The post quickly drew responses from users who acknowledged the costs but urged her to make the journey.

User _khalijahkhalid said the trip from Johor Baru to Ledang was still manageable and encouraged her to fulfil her civic duty.

"Come back to vote, JB to Ledang is still manageable and not too far. After this, just change your voting address to JB so you do not have to travel far during the next general election.

"Let's vote and fulfil our responsibility once every five years," she said.

Another user, ainawafi_abkadir, shared that she had also considered skipping the trip after moving to Selangor.

"I initially thought I wouldn't return because I already have my own home in Selangor and planned to vote there. I didn't expect Johor to dissolve its state assembly early.

"But when I remembered that voting is our responsibility as citizens, I made the effort to return," she said.

User harizdanitis echoed the sentiment, saying the inconvenience should not deter voters.

"Voting is our responsibility. We cannot say it is unimportant. After this, you can change your voting address so it will be easier in future," the user wrote.

While many acknowledged the financial burden of travelling home to vote, the overwhelming sentiment was that participating in the democratic process outweighed the temporary inconvenience. - NST
