The Melaka education department has ordered schools in the state to conduct surprise inspections to look for sharp objects.

Alor Gajah police chief Ahmad Abu Bakar said the student’s father filed a police report yesterday claiming his 13-year-old son was bullied by three schoolmates before the incident.
Ahmad said police have since opened an investigation for bullying and harassment, Harian Metro reported.
“The investigation will be conducted thoroughly before the investigation papers are referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further instructions,” he said.
He added that the parents of the three students would also be lodging police reports.
Yesterday, Ahmad said two 13-year-old students and another 14-year-old were believed to have repeatedly thrown ice cubes at a schoolmate, also 13, prior to the incident on Thursday.
He added that the suspect reacted by taking a box cutter from his pencil case and chased one of the students for about 50m before a teacher intervened and persuaded him to hand over the box cutter.
Ahmad said the student was undergoing treatment for a mental health disorder at the psychiatry unit of Melaka Hospital, and that the school was aware of his condition.
The Melaka education department yesterday said the ban on bringing sharp objects to school must be strictly enforced, adding that schools in Melaka have been ordered to conduct surprise inspections with metal detectors.
It also said an internal investigation was under way, including efforts to determine whether any elements of provocation had contributed to the incident. - FMT
