No 'VIP out-of-jail card': Projek Sama slams Najib's push for royal pardon

Projek Sama has called on jailed former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and his family to stop seeking a royal pardon before all of his criminal trials are concluded.

In a statement, the civil society organisation raised the alarm over recent remarks by Najib’s son, Nazifuddin, who said a strong BN victory in the Johor state election would signal continued public support for Najib and boost hopes for a royal pardon.

According to Projek Sama, while some Umno leaders have since clarified that election outcomes have no direct connection to the pardon process, it remains paramount to look beyond mere procedure and examine the deeper implications of such a move.

“Whatever the considerations, pardons are meant to supplement justice, not to undermine it.

“Regardless of the procedures involved, pardons become unjustified and leave a bad taste if they undermine the rule of law and erode the public’s faith in the criminal justice system.

“Pardoning Najib falls squarely into the category of political reconciliation, not compassion,” it said.

Najib, who is serving a jail sentence for the SRC International case, faces three other corruption cases in court.

Projek Sama said Najib should face full trials for all remaining cases or enter a plea bargain, rather than trying to secure a “VIP out-of-jail card through the ballot box or palace lobbying”.

If the former Pekan MP wishes to secure an early release, the group suggested he admit guilt and apologise to all Malaysians for stealing public funds.

Najib, who is also a former Umno president, must also permanently retire from Malaysian politics, Projek Sama added. - Mkini
