Sacked Umno info chief joins PAS; Johor polls turnout ahead of 2022

Politics

  • Sacked Umno leader Isham Jalil has joined PAS, saying it was to strengthen Malay-Muslim unity.

He said on Facebook that PAS was Malaysia’s cleanest party and capable of leading the country.

Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar said in a statement that Isham submitted his membership application yesterday, with Sukri as proposer and PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan as seconder.

The former Umno information chief was expelled in 2023 after openly criticising the party's leadership for working with DAP.

Johor polls

  • Johor’s election turnout is ahead of the 2022 state polls, with 42.16 percent of voters casting ballots by 1pm compared to 34.51 percent at the same time previously.

The Election Commission recorded turnout at 26.43 percent by 11am and 34.78 percent by noon, both higher than in 2022.

The EC is targeting 70 percent turnout, after the last state election saw 54.92 percent participation.

  • Police received 90 election-related reports in Johor during the 14-day campaign period, said Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail.

He said none involved candidates or party leaders, with most linked to mischief such as damaging, removing, or burning party flags.

According to Bernama, police have opened 25 investigation papers for further action.

State honours

  • Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has been conferred the Darjah Panglima Pangkuan Negeri (DPPN), carrying the title “Datuk Seri”.

He is among 230 recipients honoured at Penang’s 2026 Investiture Ceremony for Penang State Orders, Decorations, and Medals in conjunction with Penang Governor Ramli Ngah Talib’s 85th birthday. - Mkini
