Call for 7-Eleven, 99 Speedmart Muslim staff to quit to avoid booze sale trolled as unrealistic, unfeasible

NO touching, no feeling, no seeing, never mind tasting the demon alcohol.

Such is going by the standards of overly pious Threader @kenit453 who declared that it was haram for Muslims to work in 99 Speedmart, 7-Eleven, Lotus, Econsave or any other store that sells booze.

“The wages earned from that eight-hour shift is cursed by the Almighty,” he huffed self-righteously.

“Quit and let the Chinese and Indian do that work as they are kafirs (infidels),” @kenit453 added.

However, this haughty poster’s cries to cleanse oneself of the horrific sin of earning an honest wage was met with derision and no small amount of scorn.

One sarcastic commenter derided the suggestion by outlining hotels, F&B (food & beverage) and logistics as industries that Muslims should also avoid.

Adding “money touched by non-Muslims” for good measure, this non-plussed citizen laughed that he was “welcome to stay inside cave.”

This sentiment was echoed by another human resource expert who argued that Muslim staff in the hospitality industry would have to resign en masse as most hotels served booze.

This sentiment was also evident in the next comment that asked whether the mere sight of an alcoholic beverage could lead to intoxication.

Pointing out that non-beef eaters were unperturbed by the public sale of bovine meat, this equally unimpressed commenter also invited the poster to just stay at home.

A disgusted netizen further took issue with the poster’s suggestion to leave such jobs to the “infidel Chinese and Indians,” stating that such pronouncements were unwelcome in multi-cultural Malaysia.

The poster’s logic was also derided for not taking into account Chinese and Indians who are Muslim.

Were controversial Indian preacher Dr Zakir Naik and firebrand Chinese convert Firdaus Wong Wai Hung then infidels, asked this commenter incredulously. “Race doesn’t determine one’s religion,” he chided.

This rallying cry to quit was also interpreted by some cheeky netizens as a convenient excuse for laziness.

The economic fallout from such a suggestion was also highlighted as to why the poster was merely talking rubbish.

What solution did he proffer for those seeking alternative employment? Was he going to donate his own wages to sustain the unemployed masses?

The numbers surrounding the alcohol industry was also used to underline the sobering reality of the situation.

Pointing to a slew of other haram activities taxed by the government, it was then surmised that monies which exchange non-Muslim hands are thus also haram

“Don’t take any government handouts as they involve contribution from taxpayers who include Genting Bhd, Sports Toto Bhd, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd and even Heineken Malaysia Bhd which produces Tiger Beer” was this commenter’s barbed remark.

This proclamation also caught this commenter by surprise who thought that the restriction was confined to consumption, not touching.

The hypocrisy of those with holier-than-thou attitudes like the disillusioned poster was called out by this commenter, labelling this lot as serial complainers.

He added that the use of alcohol was permitted for Muslims in certain scenarios such as in the use of anesthetic medication in hospitals. “Just don’t drink it” was the simple advice.

The continued demonisation of the fire water by ultra-conservatives is a well-worn tactic used primarily to divide society by insinuating that Muslims were forced to work in unconscionable conditions.

It’s been heard before but until proper economic solutions are found, such proclamations that Muslims avoid booze in any shape or form, including in their employment, will remain delusional and ripe for people to poke fun at.–  Focus Malaysia
