Consumer group claims police behind thriving illegal gambling

Abdul-Halim_baru
PETALING JAYA: An activist with the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) has claimed that illegal gambling is widespread and thriving in the country because some police officers are supporting the vice.
PPIM Muslim Supervisory Unit chief Abdul Halim Ikhsan said the involvement of the police was no longer a secret.
“There is no need to lie about it, the people know many gambling dens in Malaysia are under police protection,” he said.
He and another PPIM activist, Yusuf Azmi, made the claims in a video recording on Sept 23.
To back up his allegation, Halim cited the existence of a gambling den in front of the Johor Bahru police station.
“In Kluang (Johor), everyone knows how big and how many illegal gambling dens there are,” he added.
Halim also alleged that a district police chief had been seen riding in a car with a gaming “tauke” (boss).
“What connection does a police chief have with a gaming tauke?” he asked.
He further claimed that information gathered by PPIM at gambling dens showed that Muslim Malays were the ones enriching illegal gaming bosses.
“Whether we want to admit it or not … when the books are closed, 90% of the money collected come from Muslim Malays. That makes us so sad,” he said.
Halim urged the minister concerned and the local authorities to stop the spread of illegal gambling dens because they possessed the power to issue licences for premises, apart from gathering intelligence.
FMT is attempting to contact the police officer named by Halim to get his response to the allegation. -FMT
