Umno leaders have often boasted of the party's role in gaining independence for the country but former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Umno today was more likely to do the opposite.
"The scoundrels like those in Umno today would never have won independence. Thankfully it was led by Tunku Abdul Rahman.
"If it was led by Najib like today, we would have come under the ownership of another country as he had amassed huge debts that we are unable to pay, Mahathir claimed in a Facebook video uploaded on Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (Bersatu) Facebook page.
Mahathir, who is Bersatu chairperson, was responding to an event at SK Putrajaya Presint 14(1) which saw students decorating the school with Umno flags and re-enacting the party's role in independence.
Umno's song was also played in the school while pupils waved the party flag.
Umno leaders had defended the event, claiming that it was merely a re-enactment of a historical event about the country's independence.
However, Mahathir accused the government of a "desperate attempt" to "pollute" the minds of schoolchildren.
"They (schoolchildren) are not stupid. If they are forced to sing (the Umno song) they will sing but they do not trust in today's Umno.
"Today's Umno had been polluted by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and the current Umno leaders," he claimed.
Mahathir, who is former Umno president, is now allied with the opposition and had vowed to remove Najib as prime minister, who he accused of corruption.
Najib had denied wrongdoing or taking public funds for personal gain.
The prime minister also accused Mahathir of trying to oust him to set the way for his son Mukhriz's rise to power, which the latter denies.- Mkini
