KUALA LUMPUR – Although he is a ‘Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad man’, Umno Information Chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa said he chose to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak because ‘politics is bigger than any individual’.
Speaking at a forum in Parliament today, Annuar admitted to being a fan of Dr Mahathir, but said he could not accept those who abandon Umno for their own agenda.
“I started my political career during Dr Mahathir’s premiership, so yes, I am a ‘Mahathir man’. I first admired him during my university days when Dr Mahathir was the Education Minister.
“But politics is bigger and more important than just one individual. Unlike Dr Mahathir, Najib continues to defend the party.
“Dr Mahathir abandoned the party for own agenda. A party is like a ship. If you abandon the ship, who’s going to steer it?” he said.
Annuar was responding to a question by a forum panelist on why he supports Najib.
The forum, titled “You ask, I answer”, featured four university students from different backgrounds as the panelists.
The Ketereh Member of Parliament said, throughout his many years of friendship with Najib, he can see that the prime minister is a patient man who always considers the feelings of others.
He said Najib’s level of patience was evident since the 1980s, back when he was supposed to contest for the Umno Youth chief post.
However, according to Annuar, Dr Mahathir wanted Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is now an Opposition leader, to be the youth chief at the time.
“Najib followed Dr Mahathir’s order without making a fuss. He’s a leader who has special qualities. He doesn’t like troubling other people and he’s very patient.
“At the time, although Anwar was in Umno, he was always criticising the party. But Najib, he’s a gentleman. So I have to admit that Najib is the best person to helm this country,” he added.
